ABA therapy with Aetna

We accept Aetna in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Arizona. Aetna reviews ABA before it starts, so we check your child's benefits for free and handle the precertification for you.

Who is eligible

Your child can receive ABA through Aetna when:

  • they are covered by an Aetna plan that includes behavioral health benefits,
  • they have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, and
  • ABA is medically necessary, based on a BCBA’s assessment and treatment plan.

Benefits differ from plan to plan. Your summary of benefits shows your copay or coinsurance, any deductible, and exclusions such as educational services. Aetna’s precertification list does not apply to a few plan types, such as Traditional Choice and indemnity plans, and we check which rules apply to yours.

How to start ABA therapy with Aetna

  1. Benefit check. Share your child’s Aetna member ID with our intake team. We confirm ABA coverage, what you will pay, and the precertification rules for your plan.
  2. Diagnosis. We collect your child’s autism diagnosis report.
  3. Precertification for the assessment. We request Aetna’s approval for the ABA assessment.
  4. Assessment and treatment plan. Our BCBA meets your child and you, completes standardized assessments, and writes a treatment plan with measurable goals and recommended weekly hours.
  5. Precertification for treatment. We submit the treatment plan to Aetna. Sessions start once Aetna approves the hours.

Once services start

The BCBA collects data in every session and tracks progress toward each goal. Before the approved period ends, we send Aetna a new precertification request with updated goals and progress, since Aetna now reviews each new period as a fresh request.

Treatment plans often include caregiver training sessions, which help you use the same strategies at home, so your child’s new skills last.

Aetna ABA therapy FAQs

Many Aetna plans cover ABA for children with autism spectrum disorder. Your own plan's benefits decide the details, such as cost sharing and any exclusions, so we check your coverage before services start.

Yes, on most Aetna plans. Aetna's behavioral health precertification list includes ABA assessment and treatment (CPT codes 97151 to 97158, 0362T, and 0373T). We submit the request and wait for approval before sessions begin.

Since January 1, 2026, Aetna no longer does concurrent review for outpatient ABA. If your child needs care beyond the first precertification, the BCBA submits a new precertification request with updated progress data, and Aetna reviews it for medical necessity.

Often not. Aetna's autism policy notes that many of its plans exclude educational services, and gives ABA during class as an example. We check your plan's exclusions with you before deciding where sessions take place.

Generally no. Aetna's ABA policy treats ABA as unproven for conditions other than autism spectrum disorder, including Down syndrome without a co-occurring autism diagnosis.

For plans that North Carolina insurance law regulates, state law requires coverage of autism treatment, including adaptive behavior treatment such as ABA, ordered by a licensed physician or licensed psychologist. The coverage may have a yearly dollar cap and may be limited to members 18 or younger.
