ABA therapy with Cigna
We accept Cigna in North Carolina, South Carolina, New Mexico, and New Jersey. Cigna reviews ABA requests against a detailed Evernorth coverage policy, so we check your benefits for free and build the request to meet it.
Who is eligible
Cigna covers ABA when your child:
- is covered by a Cigna plan that includes behavioral health benefits,
- has a confirmed autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, and
- needs ABA for medical reasons, as shown by a BCBA’s assessment.
Cigna treats ABA as not medically necessary for conditions other than autism, and it does not cover other intensive behavioral programs or services that are mainly educational or vocational.
State law can add protections. North Carolina requires plans it regulates to cover autism treatment, including adaptive behavior treatment, and South Carolina requires state-regulated group plans to cover autism treatment for children diagnosed by age eight, until age 16.
How to start ABA therapy with Cigna
- Benefit check. Send us your child’s Cigna member ID. We confirm ABA coverage, cost sharing, and the authorization steps for your plan.
- Diagnosis records. We collect the diagnosis report, including the diagnosing professional’s credentials and the date of diagnosis.
- Assessment. Our BCBA completes a standardized assessment of your child’s social communication and behavior, and collects baseline data in the settings where therapy will happen.
- Treatment plan. The BCBA writes measurable goals for your child, goals for caregiver training, and a plan for fading services over time.
- Authorization and first session. We send the request to Cigna. Therapy starts once it is approved.
Once services start
For each new authorization period, the BCBA sends current progress data, collected within 60 days of the request, along with updated goals.
Cigna’s policy expects caregiver training with its own measurable goals, so parents learn to carry strategies into home and community life. The plan also sets clear discharge criteria from the start, so you know what success looks like.

Cigna ABA therapy FAQs
Many Cigna plans cover ABA for autism spectrum disorder. Cigna's ABA rules are set out in an Evernorth coverage policy, but your own plan document always comes first, and some states require autism coverage for the plans they regulate. We check what your plan covers before services start.
Cigna's coverage policy for ABA and other intensive behavioral interventions is published under the Evernorth name, and some ABA forms carry it too. Your coverage is still your Cigna plan.
A confirmed autism spectrum disorder diagnosis based on DSM-5-TR criteria, from a licensed professional who can diagnose independently. The request has to include that professional's name, credentials, and license type, and the date of the most recent diagnosis.
Cigna's policy asks for standardized assessment results and baseline data collected within 60 days before treatment starts. Our BCBA schedules the assessment so the results are current when we send the request.
Not in the same session. Cigna does not cover ABA delivered at the same time as another therapy, such as speech or occupational therapy. Your child can still have both, scheduled separately.
Cigna's policy allows ABA in person, by telehealth, or a mix of both. The right setup depends on your child, the treatment plan, how involved caregivers can be, and your home setup.
